The Granitic Reefs of the Inner Seychelles: A Diver's Deep Dive
Drop below the surface off Mahe and the first thing you notice is not the coral but the stone. The inner Seychelles sit on a shallow granite bank, a fragment of continental crust left behind when Gondwana broke apart, and that granite runs straight into the sea. Reefs here do not rise from flat sand or a limestone platform the way they do on most tropical coasts. Instead they drape over and between rounded boulders the size of houses, filling the gaps with hard and soft coral. The result is a reef landscape that feels architectural, full of arches, canyons and swim-throughs that have no equivalent on a purely coralline island.
Why these islands are made of granite
Most oceanic islands in the tropics are volcanic peaks or low coral cays. The inner Seychelles are neither. They are the exposed high points of the Seychelles Bank, a submerged block of granite that once formed part of the same landmass as India and Madagascar. When the continents drifted apart, this sliver of crust was stranded in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The granite itself is extraordinarily old, far older than the ocean around it, and it weathers into the smooth, pale boulders that define the coastline of Mahe, Praslin and La Digue. Understanding this geology matters underwater, because the substrate a reef grows on shapes everything about how it looks and where its life concentrates.
Fringing reefs on a continental fragment
Because the islands sit on a broad, shallow bank, the reefs that surround them are mostly fringing reefs rather than barrier reefs or atolls. They hug the shore, growing out from the granite in the warm, well-lit shallows and then giving way to sand, seagrass or bare rock as the bottom deepens. In the sheltered bays the coral can form dense, continuous cover, while on exposed headlands the reef breaks into patches wedged between boulders. This patchiness is one of the signatures of the inner islands: a single dive can move from a wall of granite to a coral thicket to a seagrass meadow in a few fin kicks.
Life among the boulders
The boulder topography does more than look dramatic; it creates habitat. Overhangs and crevices shelter groupers, soldierfish and squirrelfish during the day, while the open coral areas draw clouds of fusiliers and surgeonfish. Hawksbill and green turtles are a common sight, grazing on sponges and seagrass, and the Seychelles remain an important nesting region for both. Octopus tuck into holes in the rock, and moray eels hang from the shaded gaps. Larger visitors pass through too: eagle rays cruise the sand channels, and in season whale sharks move along the coast, following plankton blooms in the nutrient-rich water. The granite gives the smaller life a foothold and the larger life a corridor.
The mark of coral bleaching
No honest account of these reefs can skip the bleaching events that have reshaped them. The strong El Nino of 1998 raised sea temperatures across the western Indian Ocean and killed a very large share of the shallow coral in the Seychelles, and further warm episodes have struck since. In places the living cover has never fully returned, and old reef framework now stands as bare rock colonised by algae. Yet recovery is real and visible. On many sites young colonies of branching and plate coral have re-established themselves, and researchers working in the Seychelles have used these reefs as a natural laboratory for understanding why some recover as coral while others shift permanently to algae. For a diver, this means the reefs read as a living record of both loss and resilience.
Marine parks and protection
The inner Seychelles have a long conservation history for the region. Sainte Anne, the cluster of small islands just off Victoria, was designated as a marine national park in the early 1970s and is often described as one of the first marine protected areas in the Indian Ocean. Other protected zones followed around Mahe and Praslin, covering fringing reefs, seagrass beds and turtle habitat. These parks limit fishing and anchoring and give the reefs some breathing room, though they still contend with warming water, coastal development and sediment run-off. Diving inside a marine park here tends to mean healthier fish populations and clearer signs of recovery than on unprotected coast.
Wrecks and the deeper sites
Not every dive in the inner islands is a natural reef. The waters off Mahe hold a number of wrecks that have become artificial reefs in their own right, the best known being a large tanker that sank off the coast decades ago and now sits upright in open water, encrusted with coral and swarming with fish. Offshore granite pinnacles and banks that rise from deeper water attract bigger schools and the occasional pelagic. These sites ask more of a diver, with more current and greater depth, but they show the same granite-and-coral pattern on a grander scale, and they are where the inner Seychelles feel least like a sheltered lagoon and most like open ocean.
The soft edges between the reefs
It is easy to fixate on the coral and the granite and overlook the ground in between, but the sand flats and seagrass meadows that link the reefs are a working part of the same system. Seagrass beds in the sheltered shallows stabilise the sediment, feed the turtles and act as a nursery for young fish that later move onto the reef. The sand channels are not empty either: garden eels rise from their burrows, rays lie half-buried, and flatfish and lizardfish wait for prey to pass. On a drift between two coral patches you often see more behaviour on the open bottom than on the reef itself, because the animals there have nowhere to hide and must rely on camouflage and stillness. For a diver learning to read the inner islands, these transitions are where the habitats connect, and where the difference between a lively reef and a struggling one becomes easiest to judge.
When and how to dive them
Conditions swing with the two monsoon seasons that govern the Seychelles year. The calmer, clearer periods generally fall in the transitions between the northwest and southeast trade winds, when visibility opens up and the sea flattens. Water stays warm year round, so exposure protection is light, and most inner-island reefs are shallow enough for long, relaxed dives. The variety is the draw: a morning on a sheltered fringing reef among the boulders, an afternoon on a wreck or an offshore bank. It is worth remembering that the Aldabra group and the other far-flung coralline atolls of the outer Seychelles are a completely different world, hundreds of kilometres away, and deserve their own separate treatment.
