Andaman Islands: A Deep Dive into the Bay of Bengal's Remote Reefs
The Andaman Islands rise from the Bay of Bengal as a long, forested chain that sits closer to Myanmar and northern Sumatra than to the Indian mainland that governs them. Around their shores, fringing coral reefs grow in warm, unusually clear water, sheltered for much of the year from the heaviest ocean swell. For divers and snorkellers, the pull is not one famous wall or a single headline creature. It is the feeling of arriving somewhere genuinely out of the way, where the reef still seems to belong to the fish rather than to the people who come to look at it.
A chain shaped by distance
Geography explains almost everything about these reefs. The archipelago strings out across hundreds of kilometres of the eastern Indian Ocean, well east of the subcontinent, and that separation has kept human pressure comparatively light. Fewer coastal cities, fewer rivers dumping sediment and runoff, and a smaller resident population mean the water tends to stay clear and the corals tend to stay clean. The islands are administered as part of India, grouped together with the Nicobar Islands to the south as a single union territory, with Port Blair serving as the main town and gateway. Most visitors pass through it before heading out to the smaller islands where the diving is concentrated.
That remoteness cuts both ways. It has protected the reefs, but it also makes them harder and slower to reach, which is part of why they never developed the mass tourism that reshaped reefs elsewhere in the region. You feel the distance in the logistics: a flight or a long boat crossing, then another ferry, and only then the reef. That threshold acts, in practice, as a filter. The people who make the full journey out tend to be there to dive and snorkel with some care, and the number of bodies in the water at any moment stays modest compared with more accessible tropical destinations.
Havelock and the islands around it
The centre of gravity for reef tourism is Havelock, officially renamed Swaraj Dweep, a modest island ringed by beaches and shallow coral gardens. It became the best known dive base in the Andamans largely because it combines accessible reefs with the infrastructure that divers need, from dive operators to places to sleep and eat. Radhanagar Beach on its western side is the island's most famous stretch of sand, but for anyone who dives, the interest lies just offshore and a short boat ride away.
Neil Island, now called Shaheed Dweep, sits nearby and offers a quieter, gentler alternative with sheltered coral and easy snorkelling. Between and beyond these islands lie dive sites that range from calm coral slopes suited to beginners to rockier, more exposed spots where currents bring in bigger fish. The variety within a small area is one of the region's quiet strengths: a single day can move from a shallow, sunlit garden to deeper structure with very different life on it.
What the reefs are made of
The Andaman reefs are predominantly fringing reefs, meaning the coral grows outward directly from the shoreline rather than forming a distant barrier separated by a wide lagoon. This gives much of the diving and snorkelling an intimate character. You are close to the island, often in clear shallow water, watching hard corals build the familiar architecture of the tropical Indo-Pacific: branching and plate-forming colonies, boulder corals, and the fish that shelter among them.
Because the islands lie within the broad Indo-Pacific realm, the species you meet will feel recognisable to anyone who has dived in Southeast Asia, yet the assemblages here carry the particular stamp of a place set apart by water. Isolation over long spans of time is exactly the kind of condition that lets distinctive local communities develop, and it is one reason marine scientists treat the Andaman and Nicobar waters as biologically important rather than simply scenic.
Life on the reef
The appeal underwater is breadth rather than a single spectacle. Reef fish dominate the everyday view: parrotfish grazing the coral, snappers and fusiliers moving in loose schools, butterflyfish and angelfish working the crevices, and triggerfish patrolling their patches of substrate. On the sand and among the coral, invertebrate life is dense, from anemones and their resident clownfish to the small, cryptic creatures that reward a slow, careful diver.
Larger animals appear as the reward for patience and the right conditions. Sea turtles are a realistic sighting, and rays glide across sandy channels. On more exposed sites where current sweeps past, the chance of encountering bigger, faster fish rises. None of this is guaranteed on any given dive, which is precisely the point of a remote reef: it operates on its own terms, and the encounters feel earned rather than staged. The mangroves and shallow habitats that fringe many of the islands also matter here, acting as nurseries that feed life back onto the reefs.
Seasons, water and how people dive it
The rhythm of a year in the Andamans is set by the monsoon. For a long stretch the seas turn rough and wet, and much of the reef tourism winds down. The calmer, drier months are when the water clears, boats run reliably, and visibility on the reef is at its best. Divers plan around this window, and it concentrates activity into the part of the year when conditions cooperate.
Water temperatures stay warm throughout, in the range that tropical corals need, so thermal comfort is rarely the limiting factor. Conditions instead depend on wind, swell and current on any given day. Operators read these carefully, matching sites to the weather and to the experience level of the divers, which is why the same island can offer both a gentle first open-water dive and a more demanding drift on a different morning. For beginners this is a forgiving place to learn, with shallow, often still water close to shore. For the more experienced, the exposed points reward planning and respect, and can deliver the larger encounters. Anyone travelling here is wise to leave slack in the schedule, because the weather has the final word and a cancelled day is sometimes simply part of the trip.
Fragility behind the isolation
It would be a mistake to treat remoteness as permanent protection. The Andaman reefs sit in the same warming ocean as every other tropical reef, and rising sea temperatures drive coral bleaching, the process in which stressed corals expel the algae that feed and colour them. Widespread bleaching events across the Indian Ocean have not spared these islands, and recovery from such stress is neither quick nor certain.
The region has also lived through sudden, dramatic disturbance. The great Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami at the end of 2004 struck the Andaman and Nicobar Islands directly, reshaping coastlines and disturbing shallow marine habitats. Reefs are resilient over time, but the combination of acute shocks and the slow grind of warming water is why conservation attention here is serious rather than symbolic. Much of the archipelago falls under protective designations, access to sensitive areas is restricted, and responsible operators lean on the ordinary discipline that keeps any reef healthy: no touching, careful buoyancy, and leaving the reef as you found it.
